ABOUT
The Stoney Nakoda, known in their own language as the Iyarhe Nakoda, are the original “peoples of the mountains.” For generations—long before European contact—they lived, hunted, and thrived across a vast territory stretching from the Great Plains, where they followed the buffalo, to the Rocky Mountain foothills, alpine passes, and beyond into the B.C. interior.
Today, you can experience a glimpse of this rich culture at the Stoney Nakoda Resort & Casino, located right at the entrance to Kananaskis Country. Alongside the entertainment and amenities, the resort features impressive displays that celebrate Stoney history and traditions:
- Artifact Displays – Large cases filled with traditional tools, clothing, and cultural items (rotated semi-annually).
- Historic Photography – A 75” digital display in the hotel lobby showcases rare images dating back to the late 1800s, complete with descriptions that bring each photo to life.
It’s a fascinating stop that combines history, culture, and storytelling, giving guests a chance to connect with the people who have called these mountains home for centuries.
Why go? It’s more than a resort—it’s a window into the living history of the Rockies’ first people
